SoMa’s Newest City Winery

Quick.

We need you to see if you have any empty wine bottles on hand.

If you do: great, keep reading.

If not: start drinking, and come back when it’s empty...

Then prepare yourself for Tank18, the city’s newest urban winery and tasting room, opening Saturday in SoMa.

We’ll get to that empty wine bottle in a minute. First, we need to describe this place. It’s airy. Warehouse-y. Full of wispy palm trees and racks (on top of racks, on top of racks) of vino. There’s a tasting room and a bar, and an alley where they’ll host food trucks on the weekends. (You’ve always wanted to score Sam’s chowder in an alley.)

Also, they’ll make their own wine here. We’re talking chardonnay from Russian River, California pinot noir, a Napa Valley Meritage and cabernet sauvignon, and an El Dorado tempranillo. You know: wine.

You can drink it via your standard tasting-room-type flight of their wines. Or get a couple bottles and spend the day at one of the pallet-stacked tables or on the sofas scattered behind the bar.

So back to that empty wine bottle. In honor of their opening on Saturday, they’re inviting you to bring your empties and refill them with their ’09 zinfandel. It’s from El Dorado, it was grown at 2,700 feet, and it was aged in oak for 36 months.

You love recycling.
