Inside District’s New Oakland Bar

Let’s say you’re at the Fox Theater.

Not right now, but... soon.

And you meet a fellow music lover. You connect... deeply. Spiritually. Soulfully. As one does at a Tenacious D concert.

You want to take her somewhere quieter. Cozier. With plush sofas. And an Olympic swimming pool’s worth of whiskey...

Say hello to District Oakland, the new Old Oakland outpost of the SoMa wine lounge, opening next Friday.

This is where you’ll go when you’re in foreign territory (the East Bay) and want something familiar (a bar named District).

The look and feel here is very much in line with the SoMa version—exposed brick, communal tables, the like. You and your fellow rock aficionado will head straight to the big horseshoe bar, made of Brazilian barn wood.

For you: a bacon-infused whiskey, egg white and maple syrup number called the Breakfast of Champions. (Vonnegut would be proud.) For her: a custom whiskey flight chosen (with the bartender’s help) from the joint’s 50-deep list.

And when hunger inevitably calls, you’ll be able to order lamb meatballs, scallops and/or crispy escargot.

Aka the bar snack of champions.
