“I know a great little place...”

“I know a great medium place...”

“I know a great large-to-extra-large place...”

Okay, yeah, the first one still sounds better.

So get to know Maruya, an intimate Tokyo-style sushi spot with a couple dozen seats and pristine slivers of fish that come nowhere near a spicy roll, opening tonight in the Mission.

There’s a warm, familiar vibe when you walk in here, like it could be a Zen spa if it weren’t a sushi place—walnut and cypress everywhere, minimal fuss on the walls, and the pleasant feeling that for the next couple of hours, you can just relax and let someone make your life better.

Or a couple someones: you’ve got two omakase options from two chefs here. Chef Hide’s is all nigiri and sashimi, but Chef Masa’s choices will include some actual vegetable-y and appetizer-y things. So, your call.

And technically you could just order off the menu—it’s full of mushroom, hamachi and Chilean sea bass wonderment, along with all the sake, Japanese oyster stouts and Dom you could want.

Assuming you haven’t gotten too greedy about Japanese oyster stouts.
