A Mission-Style Taqueria in Oakland

Sometimes you find yourself on the east side of the Bay.

And that’s okay.

But that doesn’t mean you must give up your creature comforts.

Burritos. Fog. Hill climbing.

We can help in the burrito arena.

Allow us to present Xolo Taqueria, a haven for upscale tacos and burritos, opening Monday across from the Fox Theater.

Since burritos and tacos don’t travel well, this is the spot you’ll hit when you’re taking in a show at the Fox and you need that same rice/bean/meat/wrap situation you know and love in the Mission.

Little sis to Doña Tomas—and two doors down from Flora, the other restaurant in the family—Xolo is the uptown taqueria version of taking a road trip to Tijuana. So don’t be surprised to find Virgin Mary dolls glued to the napkin dispensers and the “velvet corridor” filled with paintings of cacti and a velvet Last Supper. Or an eclectic assortment of gold chairs from a ’50s Hollywood set, orange office chairs and school chairs at each table.

You could opt for takeout, but we suggest soaking in the slightly kitsch vibe over micheladas and a burrito al pastor—or substitute your usual pork for beef tongue or brains.

You can also try the Mexican Hot Dog, a bacon-wrapped dog with avocado, salsa and beans on a Mexican bun.

Which might require extra hill climbing.
