The Golden West

Gold Standard

Your New FiDi Breakfast Window

In theory, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

In reality, breakfast is a mythical weekday luxury—the unicorn of meals.

Today, we may just have found you a pet unicorn...

Here to bring breakfast back into the fold: The Golden West, a little hole-in-the-wall dishing out both savory and sweet fine-dining-caliber takeout, open now on Trinity Alley off of Sutter.

When we say “a little hole-in-the-wall,” we’re not saying it’s a dive—it’s literally just a small window opened up to the sidewalk, dishing out hearty meals similar to its slightly bigger brother outpost, Sentinel. But what this walk-up window lacks in comparative size, it makes up for in sheer volume of foodstuffs.

You’ll know you’re in the right alley when you see the line of people standing under a glowing “Au” sign (all alleys of note have signs that reference the periodic table). When it’s your turn to step up to the window, opt for the Pork and Beans, and you’ll soon be staring down shredded pork, beans and a poached egg in a big to-go cup. For something more handheld, there’s the Mushroom/Fontina Brioche or Ham Biscuit.

And since you can’t survive on breakfast alone, you’ll want to come back next week when they open for lunch with sandwiches like short ribs, as well as more entrée-style goods like pho.

We hear unicorns like a good pho.
