Vintage Sportswear and Early ’90s Arcade Games
In case you forgot, today’s Valentine’s Day.
So let’s talk sports.
The Rangers are in first. The Giants are world champions. The Knicks are on a five-game Linning
streak.
And you’re about to come into a wealth of well-preserved Starter jackets.
Introducing
Community 54, a vintage sportswear shop that looks like your closet (circa 1991)
crossed with the clothes from a 2 Live Crew music video, now open.
Imagine if everything that was important to you in the early ’90s (excluding Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) were
distilled into one retro LES outpost. So sports, sports apparel, phones shaped like basketballs and
beer.
This place is
divided into three sections. Up front: an old-school arcade and a photo booth. Pump a few quarters into
NBA Showtime (it’s about time you and Toni Kukoc reunited), pass through the photo booth, and
you’ll be in the shop proper.
Here, you’ll notice racks full of throwback wares (everything from satin Detroit Tigers bullpen jackets to
rare color-blocked Japanese North Face shells). You won’t notice a keg. But it’s there. Behind the
counter. Ask for a Styrofoam cup to browse with and the manager will gladly oblige.
He’ll also gladly let you check out their private graffiti-tagged backyard (home to impromptu Soulja Boy
concerts) or sell your own old garbs on 50/50 consignment.
Or 10/90 if it’s Mets stuff.
