At the Jop
A Down and Dirty Underground Lounge

UD - JanisAfter all the years. All the late nights. All the rum-induced dance soirees.

There's still something about walking down a few stairs into a dark room, releasing any thought of the outside world and letting loose in an actual basement.

And since we're always on the lookout for the next such subterranean pleasure palace, allow us to take you there...

Presenting Janis, a new no-frills West Village lounge in existence to satisfy your late-night underground drinking/dancing/mingling quota, open now for weekend revelry.

Janis is built to let the party do the talking: they didn't sand the floor, finish the ceiling, install fancy Edison bulb light fixtures or even bother to line the walls in rare turquoise alligator leather (heathens).

Instead, drop by post-midnight—when your taste for attractive neighborhood denizens, strong well drinks and dim lighting is strongest—and you'll find yourself walking through an unmarked red door into a dark wooden basement, gravitating toward a red tufted leather banquette in the corner where you can soak in the music (helmed by Boom Boom Room, SubMercer and former Beatrice DJs) and even order a late-night bite from De Santos upstairs.

And if you've been curious about the name, yes, Janis Joplin lived in the building for a year and even jammed with Hendrix in the basement.

Pretty good cred for a basement.
