Cocktails by the Barrel on the LES

Tonight, you may encounter one of these things:

—Original photos of Mick Jagger.

—A paper bag with this quote: “If I cannot drink bourbon and smoke cigars in heaven, then I shall not go.” —Mark Twain

—Barrels full of booze.

Okay, you got us. By “one of these things,” we really mean “all of these things”...

At Rochelle’s, an LES whiskey haven inspired by a legendary ex-girlfriend, now soft-open.

Two guys with glorious beards are running this operation. You’ll see ’em. Both dated a muse named... yes, Rochelle. In her honor, they’ve created a place to drink whiskey. A place with arched wood ceilings and marble tables and antique mirrors and... tons of whiskey.

Two prime ways to go here: 1. The Breukelen, a bourbon-based cocktail aged in a barrel for six weeks. 2. A finger of one of their whiskeys of the week—like the Heaven Hill, a bourbon from the Bluegrass State’s only remaining family-owned distillery. (Pro tip: wash either one down with foie-gras-and-pancetta PB&Js.)

One other thing: there’s a hush-hush spot below Rochelle’s called 205. It’s a lounge that’s red, black and sexy all over, and you may have a shot of getting down there if you behave yourself.

Or if you don’t.
