It doesn’t matter if you call them subs, heroes or hoagies.

What matters is that you get to this place and start eating one as soon as possible...

Introducing Chubby Mary’s, a humble East Village storefront from the Artichoke Basille’s Pizza guys pumping out some muscular sandwichry, now open.

You’ve been known to grab some wall and indulge in a late-night Artichoke slice or three. And that’s exactly what you’re going to do here, right next door (at least you will when their late-night hours kick in, which’ll be... soon). Only here, you’ll have to bring your A-game, because you’ll be merrily struggling to keep about a foot of veal cutlet, broccoli rabe and provolone together.

This is just classic takeout sandwich country—a counter, a chalkboard menu and a Rocky mural complete with puffy 3D black eye (classic). So test the waters with a lunch run, then graduate to some dignified Saturday night sandwich double-fisting.

What those fists will contain: meatball, chicken, veal, sausage or eggplant as a base, with either provolone and Italian gravy (red sauce); onions, peppers and provolone; or broccoli rabe and provolone draped irresponsibly on top. Then all of it’s put on either a foot-long sesame hero or a small roll.

And you really don’t want to be known as “small roll” for the next 10 years.
