Amaro Has Invaded Your Moscow Mule

The Vodka-Based Classic Gets an Italian Upgrade

Mules are stubborn by nature.

But the Moscow variety has just gotten an update.

At Downtown LA’s new Officine Brera, they’re freshening up the classic drink with a float of fernet and a sluice of ginger syrup—the bitter backbone of the former playing a nice foil to the sweetness and heat of the latter.

Luigi Capasso, the restaurant’s head mixologist, cites the influence of his alchemist grandmother on this drink: “Amaros were thought of as homemade potions. She used to make herbal tea anytime someone would have an upset stomach. The tea was composed mostly of cinchona, cardamom, chamomile and ginger—ingredients you can find in fernet and other amaros (minus the ginger). I wanted to recreate that ‘elixir’ feeling.”

And all Grandma ever gave us was Werther’s Originals...

Anyway, to the drink.
