Yet Another Fine Use for Bourbon

Put down the Mrs. Butterworth’s.

Slowly back away from the Aunt Jemima.

Today, these will not do. Because today we’re mixing up the Maple Leaf, a delightful number that calls for bourbon, lemon juice and real maple syrup and tastes like a rich, autumnal take on the whiskey sour. It’s sweet, it’s tart, and it’s bourbon. So it hits all the right notes.

Now, apart from tapping a maple tree, your next best option is to simply buy a good bottle of 100% maple syrup. It’s not hard to find. It may come in a little jug or be encased in a glass maple leaf. You’ll know it when you see it.

Then, syrup in hand, you’re ready for step two. Which is to mix up a batch of these for party guests. Or sip one by the fire as you read an actual, physical book. Or abscond to the nearest campsite whereupon you’ll sit with a blanket on your lap and a drink in your hand.

Those are just a few probably unnecessary examples of how this cocktail could come in handy. We’ll think up some others while you get to making one.

Maple Leaf

2 oz bourbon
3/4 oz maple syrup
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice

Shake all ingredients vigorously with ice until cold, then strain into a cocktail glass.
