Democratic Party
Downtown’s New Democratic Republic of Beer
Let’s talk about foreign policy.
(Cue the eye-roll.)
As it pertains to beer.
(Cue the un-eye-roll.)
German hefeweizen. Belgian ale. Whatever that moonshine is that Canadians call lager. The geopolitics of it
all can be a bit touchy.
If only there were a way for them to coexist in peace and harmony—and with a bunch of sliders.
Salute
The Democratic Republic of Beer, a Downtown sequel (to the Downtown original)
that’s serving globally sourced draft beers until five in the morning, now open.
Fifty taps, one rotating cask, pouring until sunrise. That’s all you need to know. Goodbye.
Okay, come back. We’re kidding. There’s more. Like the fact that this outpost is nearly double the size
of the original. Which means more space for flat-screens, brass brewing equipment and
really long cowhide banquettes. Yes, they’re as comfortable as they look.
Anyway, this weekend is the Book Fair. It’ll be right across the street from here. After some tailoring
tips from Tom Wolfe, come by for a drink. Start at the bar with a pint from their seven-page beer menu (that
Brazilian schwarzbier should do nicely). Then, head out to the front patio and have the waitress bring you a
stogie from their cigar collection. And food from their, um, food collection.
Bratwursts, sliders or warm chocolate chip cookies. Those’ll pair up nicely with an English
stout.
Or a 2% milk.
