Getting Cornered
Downtown’s New Neighborhood Bar
This week, Art Basel chaos reigns on the beach and over the causeway.
Cell phone outages. Gridlock in every direction. Just this morning, you tried to grab a cup of coffee and
wound up tussling with three German art critics, several canvas-laden trolleys, 14 magnums of champagne and
Julian Schnabel.
You need an escape from the madness. Preferably involving whiskey and bacon sandwiches.
Good news: a few blocks south of Wynwood, an enclave of Sazeracs and old-timey charm is here.
The
Corner is now open.
This place—awash in
150-year-old gilded mirrors and velvet wallpaper—is located in the same Legal Art building that houses
NeMesis. Which means you’ll be rubbing elbows with artists who use the studios upstairs and foodies here
for predinner cocktails. They’re open for lunch, so you can stop in for a snack of
Crazy Madame
sandwiches made with bacon and caramelized onions, chased with $2 drafts of PBR, before heading back out to
the satellite fairs.
But this is first and foremost a bar, so it’s also good for a drink-laden date you want to keep going
until 2am. They’ve got
over 50 beers
available (including nine rare brews on tap), so depending on the night, you could start with a Czech-style
Lagunitas Pils and move on to a bourbon-based Elder Statesman mixed with elderflower and bitters.
It’s like performance art in a glass.
