Design District Dining Under a Big Oak Tree

Okay, so you were, like, the only person not traded to the Blue Jays last night.

That’s a good thing. Trust us.

For one, you don’t have to move.

For another, we’ve got a new speck-and-soppressata spot opening in town this weekend.

Behold Oak Tavern, a wood-hewn date spot that’s about to cram some cured meat and gin cocktails into your fall repertoire, hoping to open this Friday in the Design District.

This comes to you from the guy behind Jake’s and River Seafood & Oyster Bar. It looks a lot like your regular neighborhood tavern... if your neighborhood happened to be a forest. There’re red brick walls. Dark-brown leather banquettes. Lamps that look like trees. Trees that look like trees (there’s a massive oak towering over the courtyard).

So, a date with a soft spot for nature. And a taste for charcuterie and gnocchi with rabbit/truffle sausage. That’s probably the type you’ll want to bring here for a meal. When you do, get a Green Mile. That’s the gin, cucumber, cilantro and chili kind. Not the Tom Hanks kind.

And because at some point in the next 365 days you’re going to celebrate a birthday, know this: they’ve got a great communal table here that sits 20. It’s made from a slab of cypress wood. Also, it’s on wheels.

Don’t forget to wear a helmet.
