A Wynwood Smokehouse with Maple Whiskey

Here’s the thing about barbecue.

When it’s bad, it’s still pretty great.

When it’s pretty great, it’s a religious experience.

And when it’s smoked by a BBQ Hall of Famer, well, let’s see...

This is Pride and Joy, a Southern barbecue joint from legendary pitmaster/brisket aficionado Myron Mixon, now open in Wynwood.

The place looks exactly like a ’cue spot should—wood-slat walls pulled from a barn in North Carolina, a corrugated-tin roof punctured with buckshot holes and a ’47 Chevy truck turned bar lit up by lamps made from empty bourbon bottles and old sprockets (ah, so that’s what sprockets are used for).

Of course, when you come here (tonight), you’ll want to sit out back in their brick-paved beer garden (yup, this place has a beer garden). Grab a picnic table, get, you know, a beer, and then turn your attention to some peach butter and cornbread. That should keep you busy while your ribs and brisket are finished off in one of Mixon’s custom-made smokers.

And after dinner (but before the meat coma): some live honky-tonk music on the patio and a nightcap called Pride and Joy Waffle Batter. Which is made with maple whiskey. That tastes like waffle batter.

That tastes like it was spiked with whiskey.
