Pork Takes New Forms at a Mar Vista Bar

The day you celebrate your independence... from a bar scene that doesn’t incorporate hearty pork sandwiches and rooftop beehives.

The day you welcome Louie’s into being—it’s a bar that thinks it’s a restaurant (but didn’t forget the whiskey), officially opening tonight.

So when in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to put aside memories of hot dogs and flag-colored swimwear and start moving on with their lives... it helps to have an easy but classy bar like this waiting, with a teak-and-marble counter down one side, a mossy-green banquette down the other... and a big, bright skylight overhead.

Sit wherever, just long enough for a quick meal of PLTs—the pork is basically a bread-sized sheet of bacon—and your first round of Bee Stings, with applejack, ginger beer and honey from the rooftop beehive.

But even though the place just fed you, it’s more of a bar than a restaurant. You’re probably not going to sit at your table all night. You’re going to get up and meet some new friends. A bunch of you will end up at somebody’s loft off Abbot Kinney. Where you’ll...
