Big Bend
Pizza and 70 Beers in an Old Theater

You’re the kind of person who’s always up for anything.

Though it helps when “anything” involves pizza, mussels and 70 beers.

Which brings us to Mohawk Bend, a vast old theater of leisurely drinking, dining and lounging for strict vegans and debauched carnivores alike, scheduled to open Monday in Echo Park.

Just look out for the old marquee on Sunset (a million years ago, this place was an actual theater). There’s a patio right there at the front, which is all well and good. But keep going: beyond that is a vast cavern of communal tables, 70 beer taps (65 pouring California brews) and enough open kitchen for two chefs.

The first of those chefs will be focusing on getting you a Dork Burger (it’s a duck and pork patty, topped with green-tea-smoked duck bacon), and the other will keep your vegan date happy with a Bitter & Twisted pizza, topped with rapini, lemon zest, garlic and chili flakes. (Note: nobody’s saying vegans are bitter or twisted.)

And beyond that, past the mosaic of windowpanes at the back, is what feels like Echo Park’s biggest backyard—it’s filled with trees, though it’s technically inside. This is where you’ll abscond for a quieter dinner by a roaring fire.

You do your best absconding near fires.
