Zip It

LA County's First Zipline

UD - Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour Some weekends, you take it easy.

Other weekends, you fly through the sky on a zipline. This weekend feels like the latter.

Welcome to a brand-new testament to aerial endurance called the Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour—it's the only zipline in Los Angeles County, it's three-quarters of a mile long, and it's now taking flight.

To experience the thrill of soaring down a cable line from mountain to ocean at speeds of up to 45 miles an hour, you've first got to get yourself on the ferry to Catalina Island, then take a quick cab to Descanso Beach Club. That's where you'll meet with your flight crew (if you bring the guts, they'll bring the helmets and harnesses) and board a Mercedes Unimog that'll get you up to a peak that's affectionately known as Hog's Back.

From there, you'll attach yourself to the cable, leap off... and enjoy some of the most breathtaking views of mountains, sea, canyons and ant-people SoCal has to offer.

Your two-hour zipline journey is actually a series of five separate zips, connected by platforms to reacquaint you, however briefly, with the sensation of land underfoot. And don't worry about holding on tight—you're attached to the cable by the harness, so you can really just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Or even catch up on some scripts.
