Downward Dogging in a Furniture Store

In other parts of the country, if you want something for your place—say, a couch—you go to a couch store and you buy a couch.

In LA, you jump into some old shipping containers, play some ping-pong and do a little light yoga...

And maybe get a couch at some point.

Welcome to Ilan Dei Venice Store & Project Lab, a bold, bright new pile of high design and downward-facing dog, now open on Abbot Kinney.

Think of this place like a furniture store as a grand social experiment. We’re not really sure about the thesis, but it seems to be something along the lines of: “Come in, do random stuff and maybe you’ll buy something.”

That something you buy might be a custom couch from the designer (hint: his first name is Ilan, and he’s into modern pieces), sculptures made from wine bottles, vintage suitcases or a candelabra.

Also, you’re basically outside in a shipping container, and there’s another shipping container that’s essentially a rotating art gallery (it’s bright pink), and they’re building a platform that’ll hold a ping-pong table.

Oh, and the platform is where the almost-daily yoga sessions will go down. You could ask why...

But you are in Venice.
