A Hotbed of Fried Chicken and Waffledom

Fried chicken and waffles.

That’s not a complete sentence.

No, yes it is. There’s nothing missing.

It’s the true story of Mabel’s Fried Chicken & Waffles, a new haven for those very things giving Downtown one more reason to feel hope in the morning, now soft-open. Here’s the slideshow.

What you’ve got here is a glistening white den of golden waffles and goldener poultry, burrowed between the Belasco and the Ace from former Pici chef/owner Jason Harley. He thinks it’s time you got an upgrade by frying Mary’s chicken on the spot and getting the good syrup from Vermont. Translation: he really cares.

All you’ve got to do is say it. “Fried chicken and waffles.” Next thing, you’ll be face-to-face at a two-top awaiting a sizzling hot bird thigh, leg or breast astride a breakfast standard.

Then you’ll experiment with chipotle BBQ and sweet Asian chili sauces. Slaw and potato salad will make their mandatory appearances. And you’ll weigh whether your waffle requires roasted-bacon maple syrup or the jalapeño-infused, bourbon-soaked vanilla bean syrup.

And this won’t be a stagnant waffle scene. They’re working on waffle sandwiches, and chicken and waffles on a stick.

Humanity depends on this.
