Manta Rays and Butlers in the Maldives

None 17 Photos Amilla Fushi
How to escape for a while: first, head halfway around the world. Then make for an atoll accessible only via boat or seaplane.

We trust you know how to turn off your own cell phone.

They’ll never find you at Amilla Fushi, a stunning collection of 67 private villas on the water and in trees, now open in the Maldives.

This place has all the right colors. White-sand beaches, turquoise-blue waters and green palm trees, where you’ll find villas 12 meters in the air. (See them here.) So, right, book one of those. Or a suite built out over the ocean. You’ll enjoy either. Private pools, cabanas and fire pits in your own personal courtyard have a way of producing enjoyment.

Picture yourself doing nothing. Aka napping on a hammock in between spa services, having a drink at the sunset bar or choosing a bottle from their 8,000-bottle wine shop before requesting dinner service from a butler. (Okay, almost nothing.)

But this place is also home to a UNESCO biosphere reserve known for its manta ray and whale shark populations. And they’d just love to set you up for a dive or snorkel in their private reef.

The whale sharks are all authorized to be there.
