Shutdown Run

The Gov’t Has Shut Down. You Have Not.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. And when life gives you a furlough, you... find someplace to take the edge off. Like these places, where you can find happy hours, Oktoberfests and shutdown specials this week. So here’s how to keep yourself busy during your days off.

Buy One, Get One. All Day. Outside.
11AM

Buy One, Get One. All Day. Outside.

Well, at least it’s going to be nice all week. So sleep in, then head to DC Reynolds’s 25-foot bar out back, where they’re upping the ante on their usual buy-one, get-one-free happy hour. By starting it at 11am. We’re not even sure Congress will be awake by then.

Mon-Fri throughout shutdown, 11am-9pm, DC Reynolds, 3628 Georgia Ave NW, 202-506-7178

Coffee. Ping-Pong. Wi-Fi. The West Wing.

Coffee. Ping-Pong. Wi-Fi. The West Wing.

At least someone is catering to your needs. Like the folks at Sixth & I, who are turning two of its rooms into “Shutdown Central”—a daily setup of gratis food, coffee, wi-fi, ping-pong, board games and West Wing reruns. Martin Sheen would never have let this happen.

Mon-Fri throughout shutdown, 10am, Sixth & I, 600 I St NW, 202-408-3100

Oyster Shooters and Beer Flights

Oyster Shooters and Beer Flights

Hopefully this thing doesn’t last 31 days, but if it does, Brasserie Beck’s bar has you covered. All month, they’re pouring a flight of three Belgian and Belgian-style beers, plus three oyster shooters with beer cocktail sauce, for 15 bucks. It beats dropping an oyster in your beer.

Through October, $15, Brasserie Beck (at the bar only), 1101 K St NW, 202-408-1717

Like Happy Hour on Steroids

Like Happy Hour on Steroids

The longer the shutdown drags on, the longer your happy hour drags on at Urbana. Tonight, you can get your $8 pizzas, $7 cocktails and dollar oysters for an extra hour, till 8pm. Tomorrow, things will go until 9pm, and Thursday till 10pm. Because you may not have to get up the next day.

Fall Beers. Lots of ’Em.

Fall Beers. Lots of ’Em.

Just because it’s government-shutdown season doesn’t mean it stopped being Oktoberfest. Here, then, Pizzeria Paradiso is kicking off its Autumn Fest with its 40-odd draft lines spewing pumpkin ales, harvest ales and Oktoberfest beers. Nothing says “unrequested time off” like orange lagers.

Through Oct 15, Pizzeria Paradiso, 3282 M St NW, 202-337-1245, and other area locations
