Perfect ’10

Everything That Was Important in 2010

It was a momentous year. A transformative year. A year of self-serve lager. Here, we revisit some of our favorite stories from the year that was, from boozy slushies to lobster on wheels. Cue the flashback music...

Meridian Pint
DRAFT BEER WENT DIY

Meridian Pint

A giant list of suds: so far, so good. But suds that you can pour yourself, while a blueprint on the wall walks you through the process: great. You can’t do this with scotch.

National Pinball Museum
GEORGETOWN GOES FULL TILT

National Pinball Museum

We were happy to welcome 14,000 square feet of pinball to a city that previously had, well, zero square feet of pinball. It’s just like the arcade in the mall of your teenage years, but with fewer Hypercolor T-shirts.

Biergarten Haus
OKTOBERFEST GOES YEARLONG

Biergarten Haus

The Germans practically invented drinking outdoors. So when this 300-person beer garden opened just in time for the World Cup, it was like Oktoberfest four months early. Come to think of it, it still might be Oktoberfest.

Red Hook Lobster Truck
TAKEOUT WENT MOBILE

Red Hook Lobster Truck

2010 was the year you followed your lunch on Twitter, as food trucks took over. Leading the charge: this truck, which drew two-hour lines for $16 street food. Now, brick-and-mortar lunch spots are reacting, leading us to expect an ugly turf war for your 12:30pm dollars in 2011.

Estadio
THE OTHER SPANISH SPOT

Estadio

Entering an arena long dominated by José Andrés, the no-reservations Estadio won instant fans with its medieval decor, counter seating and chorizo sandwiches washed down by alcoholic slushies. Just like the Armada would have done it.

Kushi
BIG IN JAPAN

Kushi

Also living up to the hype this year was this Tokyo-style mashup of a robata grill and a sushi bar. Our favorite morsel here was, naturally, a mashup of the robata grill and the sushi bar, in the form of meat maki rolls.
