Hoover Damn

The Mayflower’s Stunning New Restaurant

It’s been an up-and-down month for J. Edgar Hoover. On the one hand, they’re talking about tearing down his building. On the other, they’ve restored his old watering hole in the Mayflower hotel.

This is the part that concerns you.

So say hello to Edgar Bar & Kitchen, a stunner of a spot for power lunching and after-work cocktailing, now open.

So yeah, the name: Hoover came to this very spot for lunch almost every day for 20 years. And it’s got some of the same clubby vibe: antique mirrors, old wooden liquor boxes, globe lights, waiters in double-breasted jackets. But there’s no Hoover-esque dress code (or “dress” code, for that matter).

For a business lunch with a couple G-men, you’ll want to book one of the circular leather power booths or the blond wood table ringed with antique whiskey bottles, and tuck into crab cake BLTs or beer-steamed mussels.

But much like you may have done at the hotel’s dearly departed Town & Country bar, you’ll also want to stop here after work at the four-sided, tile-and-stone bar.

And you’ll want to be served bourbon cocktails with aged blackberry balsamic, and bar snacks like housemade meatballs and baked mac and cheese with slab bacon.

Just try not to work yourself into Eastwood’s sequel.
