Uptown’s Sexy New Cocktail Den

The spot: McKinney Avenue on Friday night.

The scene: pub crawlers. Mechanical bulls. Eggnog-fueled cougars.

Your goal: a quiet evening of cocktailing.

Your answer: Tate’s, a brand-new cocktail den opening Thursday night in Uptown, with roots in that capital of refined imbibing, Winston-Salem.

From the outside, this place looks like a cozy house in the South, with a wooden patio and a green lawn out front. But inside, you’ll step into a room with stained-glass windows, a stuffed zebra head and what feels like an altar stocked to the ceiling with booze. (Amen.)

Start at the maple bar. You may be tempted by a pint of Tank 7 Ale or one of their eight martinis, but stay focused and go for the house favorite, a Blackbird Julep (Chambord, vodka and berries soaked in bourbon).

Should you be looking for a bit more intimacy—say, to discuss expense reports with that exec in accounting you met at the holiday party—you’ll want to hide out by the back wall that’s draped in green fabric. Round up some pork sliders and a couple Eternal Flames—margaritas with jalapeño-infused tequila, lime and ginger beer.

The Bangles must be honored.
