Dubious Moments of 2014

A lot of great things happened in 2014. A lot of not-so-great things happened, too. So lest we forget, here are the most dubious moments of the year. Yes, that includes communism and nudity.

JULY 8

Prince Fielder Disrobes for ESPN

Prince Fielder made a whole bunch of headlines in 2014. But not for his field-related success (he was injured). It’s because all 275 pounds of him got naked for ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. You can’t unsee that.

MARCH 1

Three Things Catch on Fire

First it was Ten Ramen, catching ablaze on March 1. Then came Dallas Chop House in August, followed by Fadi’s in October. The only good news here: unfortunate things don’t happen in fours.

SEPTEMBER 16

Banh Shop, the Accidental Communists

Just a few days after Yum Brands unveiled Banh Shop, their first foray into banh mi sandwiches, they made some serious headlines... for their questionable logo. It depicted a communist five-pointed red star, and people didn’t like that. Anyway, they pulled the sign and kept the sandwiches.

OCTOBER 3

The Leslie Brenner Saga

Proof + Pantry attempted to deny Dallas Morning News restaurant critic Leslie Brenner from paying for her meal in hopes it would prevent a review. It didn’t exactly work, but it did fuel a backlash against the critic and her five-star system. It also resulted in her coming back disguised as a mummy. True story.

OCTOBER 13

Joseph Randle Pilfers Some Underwear

When you’re DeMarco Murray’s backup, it’s hard to get noticed. Unless you liberate an area Dillard’s of some cologne and a two-pack of Polo underwear. Then you’ll be arrested and all over the news. Guess Joseph Randle’s $495,000 salary wasn’t quite cutting it.
