Road trip. Just saying the words conveys images of crisp weather and fall foliage. And bad Tom Green movies. But let’s focus on the positives here. So below: five places to visit this fall, provided you enjoy things like treehouses and bourbon.
If you’ve seen one brewery, you’ve definitely not seen them all. Not when Austin keeps the newly opened Oasis brewery tucked away above Lake Travis. The beers are good, the views are great, and the combination of the two also deserves a positive descriptor.
After driving three hours to a secluded treehouse, you typically require:
1) An actual treehouse.
2) Access to said house via a rope bridge.
3) Some kind of waterfall-hot-tub situation.
4) Reservations for an elaborate zipline canopy tour.
That last one’s really more of a bonus.
Hop in the car, head for the Hill Country and don’t stop until you hit the Dripping Springs distillery. Then, absolutely stop. Because you’ll want to tour the operation, thank a copper pot still and proceed to sample gin and vodka in the brand-new tasting room. It’s a very important room.
You’d cross state lines for a good mint julep. But here, you’ll just have to point south toward Houston, because that’s where Alba Huerta’s stunner of a bar just opened. It’s called Julep, and it serves all manner of delicious... yeah.
It’s... not particularly close. But Texas is big, and New Mexico is our neighbor, and it’s nice to meet the neighbors. So try Taos and the new Palacio de Marquesa. It’s an artsy little inn of just eight rooms. One of which can be yours. Or all eight. Don’t feel restricted.
