As you bid adieu to 2013, try to remember all the good times you had together. Times involving beer massages, indoor skydiving, underground spas and all the other entirely necessary ways you spent the year. Let’s reminisce.
The Joule stayed busy in 2013, adding new places to eat, shop and become caffeinated. Throw in a stunning subterranean spa and a Taschen Library for flipping through coffee-table-worthy books, and you finally got yourself an all-day hangout right there on Main Street. No offense to Iron Cactus.
In 2012, Highland Park Village was a stylish-enough place. But then 2013 happened and everything became a haze of cashmere this and custom suits that. Frankly, we blame Tom Ford, Brunello Cucinelli and Ermenegildo Zegna. Can’t take those three anywhere.
Back in May, Pockets closed, leaving a made-to-measure-sized hole in your heart. But then it reopened this fall with a new look, a new address and a bunch of fall-related essentials (shawl cardigans, wool blazers), to the delight of all. Especially your torso.
In 2013, you consumed your fair share of beer and bourbon. Sometimes, right through your skin. Because Hiatus Spa + Retreat offered a couple of high-proof massages that scrubbed, doused and thoroughly kneaded you with two of your favorite drinks. Or at least, two of our favorite drinks.
There’s nothing wrong with Thursday night softball. But sometimes you need a little more action. Like jumping ramps on a wakeboard, strapping a water-powered jetpack to your feet or fake skydiving in crazy wind tunnels. All things that became possible this year. All things that’ll make you appreciate softball next year.
It’s always nice to have options for those illicit trysts you can neither confirm nor deny having in 2013. Options that go beyond the usual hotels. Something more akin to these discreet and homey bungalows tucked away on a tree-lined street behind ZaZa. We know, first you’re hearing of this.
You likely spent some time outdoors this year. Maybe you did so huddled near a fire. Hopefully you did so with a damn handsome handmade knife for whittling and a copper lantern for seeing in the dark. There’s a right way, and a wrong way...
