Everything That Was Important in 2011

In just four short days, you’ll be bidding adieu to the double ones with your cocktail in one hand and the NBA championship trophy in the other. But before you take on 365 more days, let’s sit back and reflect on the year that was 2011.

YOU DINED ON TOP OF A MOVIE THEATER

Marquee Grill

You’ve always pictured yourself on a movie marquee. Just, you know, not literally sitting on one. That was until the Marquee Grill opened up on top of the Highland Park Village Theatre. But you have to roll out your own red carpet.

YOU DRANK BEERS ON THE KATY TRAIL

Katy Trail Ice House

Something big happened in 2011—no, not Most Eligible Dallas. We’re talking about the biggest beer garden in Dallas, opening right on the Katy Trail. Jogging has never been so intoxicating. Also, counterproductive.

YOU DANCED IN A SPACESHIP

Rio Room

Flash back to 1983. There is a futuristic lair of dancing and cocktails and (we assume) neon spandex. But then it closes and everything else feels meaningless. Cut to 2011: the Rio Room returns with lasers and astronaut helmets orbiting its dance floor. Sadly, no word on the spandex.

GREENVILLE AVE ROSE FROM THE ASHES

Terilli’s, Rohst and Dodie’s

In 2010, the Greenville fire wiped out three restaurants. Among them: Terilli’s. (You couldn’t even look at lasagna for months.) Then in 2011, Terilli’s was reborn with a rooftop and two new neighbors: Rohst, a Korean pork ribs spot, and Dodie’s, a Cajun joint. And you and lasagna lived happily ever after.

YOU BRUNCHED WITH FIRE

Sunday School at Hotel ZaZa

Your Sunday brunches always needed one more thing: a DJ. Or a DJ, plus sparklers, the tooth fairy dancing on tables, countless bottles of champagne, pancakes on a stick and... well, anyway. Sunday School made it happen.

YOU DRANK MANY, MANY COCKTAILS

A Trio of Speakeasy-Style Nightspots

Your year started with the unveiling of punch bowls and Prohibition-style cocktails at the Cedars Social. Then Tate’s rolled out 39 hand-crafted libations. And it came to a close with an 11-chapter cocktail menu at the Chesterfield. The result: you’re thirsty.

YOU CRASHED SOME POOLS. ALLEGEDLY.

Infiltrating the City’s Hottest Pools

We firmly believe in always being prepared—especially when it comes to sunbathing. That’s why we offered you a few subtle blueprints for crashing the city’s best residential pools. What you did with this info was up to you.
