So Addictive

Two Stories of Indulgence in River North

The line between indulgence and overindulgence is hard to define.

Watching Top Gun: indulgence. Watching Top Gun four times in a row: probably overindulgence.

Speaking of overindulgence, say hello to American Junkie, a two-story, 17,000-square-foot paean to beer, sports, live music and chili cheese fries, opening tomorrow in River North.

We realize this is a lot to process. So just focus on these four key aspects:

1. Downstairs is for lovers. Specifically, meat lovers. Former Sepia chef Kendal Duque starts you on the safe side—wild-boar-chili cheese fries—before firing some strip-loin burgers and foie-gras-and-pineapple flatbreads at you. (Not literally.)

2. Upstairs may get loud. That’s just what happens when you have a 100,000-watt sound system blasting DJs who’ll play anything from house to country. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard 100,000 watts of pure Shania.

3. Don’t get used to the ceiling. The decor looks like a motorcycle shop designed by Mies van der Rohe: floating glass staircases, polished concrete floors, a 360-degree bar. Oh, and a totally retractable glass roof.

4. March Madness will be crazy big. They have 37 flat-screens. No biggie. You probably do, too. But they also have one of the country’s largest seamless televisions, measuring 8 by 16 feet. NCAA basketball never looked better.

And wait until you see Downton Abbey on it.
