Heart of the Matto
Ceiling Frescoes and Salumi at theWit

Fourth of July weekend has seen you do some pretty insane things. Smoke bombs. M-80s. Taste of Chicago turkey legs.

So come next week, you'll be ready to return to your good senses...or at least better food.

Introducing Cibo Matto, a shiny temple of modern Italian cuisine, opening Tuesday on the second floor of theWit hotel.

The name translates to "crazy food," but you'll emerge with your sanity intact after proceeding up the glass-and-steel staircase, past a gleaming 2000-bottle strong glass wine tower, and into the dining room. (Thousands of bottles of wine tend to have that effect.)

On nights when you're just looking for a quick glass of prosecco and a nibble of salumi, grab a lounge chair overlooking State Street. But Cibo's soft leather booths—with their even softer bolster cushions—might leave you ready to settle in and to get know your date a little better. In that case, try former mk chef Todd Stein's Grilled Chicken Served Over Escarole and White Beans or Lake Superior Whitefish With Peperonata and 25-Year-Old Balsamic Vinegar.

Just be sure to look up: the centerpiece of the dining room is a 30-foot fresco where floating, semi-clad figures cavort in a tasteful bacchanal. It clocks in somewhere between the Sistine Chapel and a mild hallucination.

Good thing you're ready for a summer trip.
