A South Loop Steakery Next to a Movie Theater

Dinosaurs. Avengers. Ant-men. Terminators. Train wrecks. Magical Mikes. Potty-mouthed teddy bears.

Ah, the Hollywood blockbuster. So much sizzle, so little steak.

It’s okay, though. The steak’s right next door.

At Chop, a come-as-you-are steakery right next to the ShowPlace Icon in the South Loop’s Roosevelt Collection, opening tonight. (This is what it looks like and this is the menu.)

It’s a beef-focused spin-off from the people behind Porkchop, and it’s an easy win when you’re looking for a super-casual dinner-and-a-movie date situation.

All the hallmarks of a good old-fashioned saloon are there—rows of rounded booths. Lots of bar-top seating. The word “SHOT” spelled out in marquee letters. Also, a mezcal-and-chocolate-bitters cocktail called Hecho en Chicago. Can’t call it a saloon without chocolate bitters.

Anyway, you should come in for a quick bite before your movie. A burger with bacon jam. Little steak poutine. Maybe a prime rib slider. But you’ll also find all the menu accoutrements of your classic Chicago chophouses like 16-ounce cowboy ribeyes, king crab legs and a 40-ounce porterhouse that just dares you to order it.

Classic human vs. steak plot.
