Five New Shops for Summer Dappery

Lobster rolls. Sun. Large bodies of saltwater. Those are things you might encounter on your Memorial Day travels. Also, denim motorcycle gloves. Because here come some of New England’s newest haberdasheries that are but a road trip away. Don’t worry, there’s shorts and stuff, too.

NEWBURYPORT

Skowhegan Dry Goods

What: A room that’s heavy on exposed brick and even heavier on Filson watches, handmade leather moccasins and toothpicks flavored like single malt scotch.
Why: For that moment when you simultaneously need to check the time, exit a cabin, remove an errant bit of sustenance and taste scotch. It’ll come.

PORTSMOUTH

Papa Wolf Supply Co.

What: A shop festooned with a giant American flag, a motorcycle and paintings of motorcycles. And we haven’t even mentioned the waxed-canvas aprons, selvage denim biker gloves or Zippos engraved with “Live Free or Die” yet. Just did, though.
Why: You’re pretty pumped for that new Mad Max.

PORTSMOUTH, PART II

Sault New England

What: The South End outfitter’s new Portsmouth colony that’s expected to open next Thursday. Look for Loyal Citizen T-shirts, button-downs from New England Shirt Company and a bunch of decorative nautical rope.
Why: You’ve had Sault, and you want seconds.

EAST GREENWICH

Blueprint 5

What: A Rhode Island handsome factory offering Luciano Barbera ties, linen shorts from Naples, custom-made suits and everything else needed to convince others that you’re next in line for the Fiat fortune.
Why: Fine Italian wearables have a tendency to improve your appearance at work/on patios eating ribs.

NANTUCKET

What: Last year, some hero turned an old ship chandlery on Nantucket Harbor into a bona fide men’s store for the summer. And it’ll be back on June 10 with new gear like West Coast–inspired beachwear from Faherty Brand.
Why: It’s been too long since you procured things in a chandlery.
