Two Floors of Sushi and Sake on Salem

In just a few days, you’ll be celebrating apple pie, bald eagles and Technicolor explosions.

Which pretty much leaves you free to celebrate sake, juleps and lobster fried rice tonight.

Such is the forecast at Crudo, a new bi-level sushiteria where all of those things are only an ask away, now open on Salem Street.

This may be in the North End. But it’s as far from “the North End” as you can get.

Inside, it’s equal parts Japanese minimalism and 1800s ship chandlery—you’ve got a marble bar on each floor and an indoor waterfall that’s also a mirror. All of which are offset by just the right amount of rough woods, nautical lamps and rope-shaped ironwork. (And here’s the slideshow to prove it.)

Immediately, you get the feeling that tonight’s going to be something serious. Maybe it’s the deep house pulsing all around you. But more likely it’s the Hibiscus Mint Juleps with rye and hibiscus honey. Or the off-menu Elder Scroll with sake-infused St-Germain.

And then—just as the menu foretold—you’re visited by tempura oysters, hamachi crudo and a Geisha Girl roll with shrimp tempura, truffle oil and garlic chips.

So nothing like a California roll.
