Introducing Urban Grape South End, the sexy sister of the beloved Chestnut Hill stockade of wine and local ale, opening tomorrow on Columbus Avenue.
If the princess from The NeverEnding Story constructed a glowing-white wine room for her Ivory Tower, this would be it. Upon walking in, you’ll notice two things. First, humongous lightbulbs that are actually inverted demijohns—huge fermenting vessels used by the ancient Romans and Greeks. Second, 400 or so suds including Notch, BBC, and High and Mighty (yes, that last one comes in 22.9-ounce bombers). Not to mention about 70 sakes (mmm... sake).
You’ll also see shimmering white walls of global red, white, rosé and sparkling wine, arranged from light to heavy. All complemented by a 14-foot tasting table (yes, they’ll be hosting local chef battles) and a custom, temperature- and humidity-controlled, 16-bottle tasting machine that looks like it was lifted from a biotech lab. It’s here where you can try half-ounce samples of vino to direct your palate to the appropriate wall area.
Or just stand there refilling your glass over and over.
