The Tequila Bar Midtown Never Saw Coming

Take tequila, for example.

Wait, wow.

Sorry about that—we totally jumped the gun there. We were actually just thinking about this new place and kind of got overexcited.

You see, it’s the kind of place where tamales are considered a work of art and bad decisions turn good with the help of a few... abundant commodities.

Take tequila, for example...

Welcome to Escorpion, a rustic and handsome new tequila bar/cantina from the chef behind Fritti and Sotto Sotto, opening Monday in Midtown.

To get a feel for this place, picture the set of Once Upon a Time in Mexico, only less Antonio Banderas and more tequila—skeletons and scorpions tattooed on the ceiling, framed gaucho uniforms on the wall, cowhide-covered seats flanking the wraparound copper bar.

It’s the kind of spot where your pre–Fox Theatre date could just as easily turn into a mezcal-fueled romp (they’re open late) by way of 20 tequila/mezcal-only cocktails like the Puebla Unida with mezcal, agave and poblano pepper, and the formidable El Matador (reposado, 151, raspberry tea, mezcal, tamarind...).

But should that dinner date somehow take a turn toward... dinner, you’ll want to head to one of the black leather booths in the corner, where you’ll sift through cinnamon-flecked chicken mole, salmon ceviche and barbecued goat with bacon-laced pinto beans.

If anything deserves a good bacon-lacing, it’s pinto beans.
