Get Out of Dodge

Your Fall Road Trip Preview Has Arrived

Long weekend. Road trip. Hey, those two things go together. So we’ve got some suggestions down there on where to go, based on how far you’re willing to drive. Bonus: if you already have plans this weekend, they’ll also be around all fall.

On Your Way There, Stay the Night Here
DISTANCE: 45 MILES

On Your Way There, Stay the Night Here

In 1890, the fantastically named Dr. James T. Van Horne built a huge manor in Monroe. And in 2014, it became a B&B with a suite that has a freestanding tub near the foot of the bed. Not a bad just-passing-through-on-the-way-to-Charleston pit stop. Especially if you need a bath.

The Only Known Wine Caves in Georgia
DISTANCE: 78 MILES

The Only Known Wine Caves in Georgia

Hop in the car on a Saturday, roll the windows down and drive until you sense that there’s a vineyard with wine caves nearby. Get out and take a tour through them. Taste some unreleased wines. Think about how specific your senses are.

Get Out of the Car. Strap on a Harness.
DISTANCE: 170 MILES

Get Out of the Car. Strap on a Harness.

After being cooped up in a car for hours on end, it’s nice to stretch your legs sometimes. Maybe traverse over 70 obstacles like rope swings and bridges followed by some light ziplining at this new adventure park in Tennessee or something. Rest stop works in a pinch, though.

This Road Trip Involves a Boat Trip
DISTANCE: 233 MILES

This Road Trip Involves a Boat Trip

This requires:
1) Heading to the South Carolina coast with someone you enjoy.
2) Getting on a boat.
3) Arriving at Daufuskie Island, touring the new rum distillery there (they officially open this winter, but will give you a tour now) and sampling product.
4) Sampling just a touch more product.

The End of the Road Has Golf and Tequila
DISTANCE: 315 MILES

The End of the Road Has Golf and Tequila

There’s a new inn on Sea Island with rooms you can book. Have fun.
...
Oh, almost forgot. It has access to three golf courses and a shooting school, and in the lobby: some random beef jerky and a tequila-OJ-grapefruit-and-bitters cocktail called the Head Shrinker. Okay, you can have fun now.
